New Early Years Learning Program (in process of being implemented)

BLC is working together with Let's Talk Science to produce Canada's first comprehensive year-long hands-on program for children to explore, learn and apply basic mathematics, sciences and technology concepts in daily programming within a structured early years learning program (ages infant – 5 years) and an after-school program (ages 6-12).

Designed to develop critical skills and positive attitudes towards Science, including the environment, it will incorporate hands-on activities suitable for young children, educator-training materials, and print learning materials with the following attributes:

  • child-centred
  • integrated and holistic approach to learning with a focus on “real life”
  • based on solid educational theory
  • strong math, science, environment, and technology component

It will be an new innovative learning program that answers children’s questions about their world (most of which are actually Science-based). It will encourage their innate curiosity and foster the development of critical skills and abilities such as working with others, asking good questions, and solving problems. This curriculum will provide a solid foundation for lifelong learning and interest in Science.

The Technology

The BLC centre will also initiate the following technologies in their ongoing effort to be a state-of-the-art child care facility:

  • Controlled entry to building with a swipe card for authorized parents and personnel
  • High-speed internet access at the centre for research and hosting of servers (in process of being implemented)
  • Dedicated database intranet for child reporting and progress, as well as account and care information (in process of being implemented)
  • E-mail and other internet technologies for communication with parents
  • Incorporation of networked computers in all rooms, for fun, learning and data entry
